How to grow as a gaming content creator

Updated 5 November 2026

Growing as a gaming creator mostly comes down to posting good moments often, in the formats people actually watch. Clip everything, post short vertical clips with captions, keep a schedule you can hold, and share your best clips where your community already talks. None of it needs expensive gear, and a free recorder covers the recording side.

Clip often, decide later

The moments that do well are rarely the ones you planned. So the first habit is simple: record all the time, and save whenever something makes you laugh, swear or sit up. An instant replay recorder fits this perfectly, because it keeps the last stretch of your game in memory and you press a key after the fact.

With Clippy, recording starts by itself when a game starts, and F8 saves the replay. Bind it to a mouse side button or a controller button if reaching for the keyboard breaks your play. Save more than you think you need. Sorting a folder of clips later is easy; getting back a moment you did not save is impossible.

Post short vertical clips

TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels all use vertical 9:16 video, and short clips are a common way for new viewers to find gaming creators. Trim each clip down to the moment, start close to the action, and end right after the payoff.

Clippy exports vertical clips with the game filling the frame or on a blurred background, and can put your webcam in a panel above or below the game. The TikTok clips guide walks through the choices.

Make clips that work with the sound off

Some people watch feeds with the sound off. If your clip depends on what you said, put it on screen. Captions do that automatically. Clippy generates them on your own PC, can highlight the word being spoken, and lets you fix mistakes before export. See auto captions for gaming clips.

A short line of text at the top helps too. "Watch the left door" or "1 HP" tells a viewer why to keep watching. Clippy allows up to three text items on an export, and one is usually enough.

Post on a schedule you can keep

Consistency beats bursts. Pick a pace you can hold for months, not one you can hold for a week, and stick to it. A small backlog of edited clips makes this much easier: when a session gives you nothing, you still have something to post.

Export presets save time here. Set up your usual vertical layout once and every clip after that takes a click. Keep your own logo on as a watermark if you want your clips to be recognisable when they get reposted.

Every few weeks, look at your best and worst clips side by side. Notice which games, which kinds of moment and which openings held people, and make more of what worked. That matters more than any single editing trick.

Share in the communities you are already in

Discord servers for your game, your friend group and your own community are where your first viewers come from. Share a link rather than a file: in Clippy, press Share and the clip is uploaded to clippy.gg with a link copied. It shows as a clean embed in Discord, and anyone with the link can watch without an account.

If you run a server, Clippy can post your shared clips to a channel automatically through a webhook, so your community always sees the latest. Our Discord guide covers file sizes and links.

If you stream, let clips come to you

Streams are full of moments you are too busy to clip. Clippy's streamer mode, off by default, saves clips automatically when you get loud, when chat speeds up or when viewers type !clip. Afterwards a review screen lists the moments best first, and a recap joins the best of them into one video. That gives you a highlight video for every stream and a stack of short clips for the week. More in automatically clip stream highlights.

Questions

How often should a gaming creator post?

As often as you can keep up for months. A steady pace you can hold beats a burst followed by silence, and a small backlog of edited clips helps.

Do I need expensive software to start?

No. Clippy is a free recorder for Windows 10 and 11, and it works on NVIDIA, AMD and Intel graphics.

Should I post the same clip on TikTok, Shorts and Reels?

It is a simple way to see where your audience is. All three use vertical 9:16, so one export works for each.

Are captions worth adding to gaming clips?

Yes, when the clip depends on what you say. Some viewers watch with the sound off, and captions let them follow along.
