Record game audio and Discord separately

Updated 5 November 2026

To record game audio and Discord separately, you need a recorder that puts each source on its own audio track. On Windows 11 Clippy does this by itself: the game, everything else (Discord, music) and your microphone each get a track, plus a mixed track. You can then turn any of them down or off after the clip is saved.

Why separate tracks are worth having

With one mixed track, every sound is baked together. If a friend talks over your best moment, or a song is playing that you cannot post, the only fix is to cut the audio entirely.

With separate tracks, the clip still holds everything, but you decide later what stays in. You can drop the voice chat for a clean game-only clip on social media, keep your own commentary and lose the music, or lift the game sound so footsteps are clear.

How Clippy splits the audio

On Windows 11, Clippy records three sources as separate tracks: the game itself, everything else on the PC (Discord, music, a browser), and your microphone. It also writes a mixed track that has all of them together.

On Windows 10, the game and other sound share one track, so Discord and the game cannot be pulled apart. The microphone is still recorded on its own track. If splitting Discord from the game matters to you, Windows 11 is the way to get it in Clippy.

Setting up your microphone

The microphone track is the one you have most control over while playing.

  1. In Clippy, pick your microphone. You will see its level move as you talk.
  2. Set a mute key if you want to cut the mic mid-game without alt-tabbing.
  3. Or turn on push to talk: the mic is recorded only while the key is held, and the key still reaches Discord, so one key works for both.

Adjusting the tracks after recording

Open the clip in the Clippy editor. Each track can be set anywhere from 0 to 200%, or muted, and you hear the change live while the clip plays. Raise the game, lower Discord, mute the mic: whatever the clip needs.

If you edit in another program instead, keep in mind that plenty of video players only play one audio track, while a video editor shows each track on its own.

One clip, different mixes for different places

Separate tracks pay off most when the same moment goes to more than one place. For your friends' Discord, the full mix with everyone shouting is often the best part. For a public post, a version with only the game and your own voice usually works better, and one with only the game sound suits a montage set to music.

Because the sources stay apart in the clip, each of those is a few seconds of work in the editor rather than a lost cause. Export once per mix, and keep the original clip as it is.

Tips for clean audio in clips

  • Remember that "everything else" means everything: music, videos and Discord all land on the same track. Pause music you do not want to keep apart from voice chat.
  • Use push to talk if your room is noisy. It keeps the mic track quiet between the things you actually say.
  • Keep a mute key for moments you would rather not have on record.
  • Before posting a clip publicly, listen once with the Discord track muted. Friends did not necessarily agree to be on your TikTok.

Questions

Does Clippy record Discord audio?

Yes. On Windows 11, Discord is recorded on the "everything else" track, apart from the game and your microphone. On Windows 10 it shares a track with the game.

Can I remove my friends' voices from a clip?

On Windows 11, set the other-sound track to 0 or mute it in the editor. That track also carries music and anything else playing, so those go with it.

Does push to talk in Clippy stop the key reaching Discord?

No. The mic records only while the key is held, and the same key still reaches Discord, so you can use one key for both.

Can I make my microphone louder after recording?

Yes. Each track in the Clippy editor goes up to 200%, so a quiet mic can be lifted without changing the game sound.

Why are game and Discord on one track on Windows 10?

Clippy only separates the game from other sound on Windows 11. On Windows 10 they share one track, while the microphone is still recorded separately.
