Clippy vs Xbox Game Bar: a free Game Bar alternative for Windows

Xbox Game Bar is part of Windows 10 and 11 and can record gameplay with nothing to install. Clippy is a separate app for people who want a recorder made for clips: it starts when your game does, keeps the last minutes ready, and has an editor and a share link built in.

What Clippy does

  • Free, with no watermark.
  • Recording starts when a game starts and stops when it closes. No profiles to set up.
  • One key (F8 by default) saves the last minute. The buffer goes up to three minutes.
  • Records the game window rather than the whole screen, so nothing else on your desktop ends up in a clip.
  • An editor to trim, add chapters, change speed, export a GIF and rebalance game, desktop and mic tracks (separate tracks on Windows 11).
  • One link to share, with clean embeds on Discord and X. Viewers need no account.
  • Imports your existing Game Bar captures (beta), sorted by game with their original dates.

Where Xbox Game Bar is different

  • Comes with Windows, so there is nothing to download or keep updated separately.
  • One overlay for capture, audio and other Xbox features.
  • Made for occasional recording rather than for building a library of clips.

Check Microsoft's Xbox Game Bar support pages for its current features.

Which one fits

Pick Clippy if you want clips found, trimmed and shared in one place. Stay with Game Bar if you only record now and then and want nothing extra installed.

Switching from Xbox Game Bar?

Clippy can copy the Xbox Game Bar clips already on your PC into its library, sorted by game and with their original dates. How clip import works.
